Americans aren¹t the only ones interested in preserving their environment. This month we look at a sample of some non-American environmental Web sites.

AUSTRIA

CEDAR (Central European Environmental Data Request Facility )


CEDAR is a project of the Austrian Federal Ministry for the Environment. CEDAR provides facilities to support international data exchange with the Central and Eastern European environmental community. This includes access to and communication with remote networks and information providers (telnet, FTP, Gopher, World Wide Web) global database search and retrieval subscription lists, bulletin boards, and on-line querying of CEDAR in-house databases. This is a very comprehensive environmental site with many searchable databases, articles, newsletters and more.

BC Spaces for Nature

BCSN works to protect wilderness in British Columbia and delivers World Wildlife Fund's (Canada) Endangered Spaces Campaign for British Columbia. They also track mining issues in British Columbia, work on a variety of Parks and Wilderness Campaigns with environmental organizations throughout the province, both locally and at the provincial level.

AgriWeb

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have put together a remote access national directory of information on Canadian agriculture and agri-food information resources on the Internet. The site is in both English and French.

There are more than a hundred Web, gopher, and ftp sites listed in alphabetically order that deal with Canadian agriculture. The listing is updated continuously.

Much of the information is in Danish, but English is available. Has links to Information about environment and energy, and various Danish environmental agencies. Keyword search in the Ministry's WWW-server.

The Alfred Wegener Institute

Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is located in Bremerhaven, Germany. One of 16 national research centers in Germany, it was established in 1980 and named after the geophysicist and polar researcher, Alfred Wegener, who died in the Greenland ice in 1930.

AWI includes fundamental scientific research in the polar regions, national coordination of polar research projects, logistic support of polar expeditions from other German institutes, and coordinates international co-operation in polar and marine research.

Research is carried out on board the RV "Polarstern", in the laboratories of the Institute, on the ice, and on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. According to their mission statement, ³The objective is to achieve a better understanding of the complex relationship between water, ice, the atmosphere and the seabed as well as the fauna and flora. Special attention is given to developments in global change accelerated
by human impact. ³

Birmingham Friends of the Earth.

You can find their electronic version of their newsletter here dealing with local issues, links to other FoE sites, as well as other environmental organizations. This site deals with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. FOE is the largest international network of environmental groups in the world, represented in 52 countries.

NORWAY

CICERO (Center for International Climate and Environmental Research - Oslo).

CICERO is a policy research center in Oslo, Norway and conducts climate and environmental research. Founded in 1990 by the Norwegian Government, their research staff is multidisciplinary covering political science, economics, natural science and sociology. There is an online newsletter, list of their publications, and links to other environmental sites, databases, and Norway specific sites.
