tips14.txtTEXTttxtAL$$OMESH TIPS FOR KIDS by Don Rittner Issue 1.4, June 1995 1. Reinforce to your child the age old rule:Beware of Strangers.A stranger online is no different than a stranger in the park. 2. If your child uses an online service like America Online or Prodigy, make sure the master account is in the parent's name, and use the parental control features to block your childs access to chat rooms or Usenet newsgroups. 3. Do NOT give out your password to your child and be sure your password has no relation to family, work, or friends. When creating a password, use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, to make it harder to figure out. 4. The parent should be familiar with the online service the child uses. After all, you wouldnt go to Paris without checking it out first. Cyberspace travel is no different. 5. If your child is singled out in a public chat room and asked to go to a private room the child should politely refuse by saying he/she is too interested in the public discussion and doesnt want to miss any of it. If the the person persists, the child should tell the person they will be reported to customer service. 6. If a child is solicited, or harassed online, the child should copy the persons user ID down and report them immediately to the customer service department of the online service. 7. If you have a daughter online, select a user ID that is non-gender specific, or use an alias. Do not use feminine-sounding names. 8. Make sure your child does not give out his or her real name or address unless they are sure of who they are chatting with.
